14) Lamu Island

ASSALAMUALAIKUM AND SALAM SEJAHTERA..

For your information,
I love been at the beach. When I been there,
I feel the peace and the fresh air..
Besides, I see the powerful of god and I praise to god
that I get the chances live on the earth.

Here, I show you Lamu Island
which located at Kenya and suitable for
a couple want to honeymoon here..

Lamu has been called 'enchanting' and it is no great surprise that this is the word used to describe it.
Its long, white sandy beaches framed by rolling dunes are as unspoiled today as they were when the land was settled in the fourteenth century as a Swahili trading post.

Lamu town is Kenya's oldest and it has had a colourful history.
In its day it served as a thriving port for the export of timber, ivory and amber as well a major outpost for the then thriving slave trade.

After the abolition of slavery, Lamu's economy suffered, and has never fully recovered.
Tourism arrived in the 1960s when the sleepy island turned into a hippy heaven, rivalled only by Katmandu.

The island has, however, managed to retain its distinctive character and charm.
The simple lines of the Swahili architecture, built in coral and mangrove wood and featuring porches and rooftop patios, allows the friendly locals every opportunity to gather and enjoy the sweeping ocean views in the afternoon breeze.

Donkeys – the main mode of transport - wander through labyrinthine streets the width of an average pavement.

Children's laughter echoes in the courtyards as they play in the dappled sunlight while men chat in groups in the street and women wearing their black buibui veils scamper around behind the heavy carved wooden doors for which the island is famous – offering another snapshot of paradise.

WHERE IT IS
Off the coast of Kenya.

HOW TO GET THERE
The best way to get to lamu is to fly. The road to Lamu is rough and while there are buses, the journey is tedious and sometimes dangerous.

WHAT TO SEE
At the centre of town is sultan's Fort, built by the omanis in 1808, and now a museum.

WHAT TO DO
Relax and enjoy.

CULTURAL ETIQUETTE
Lamu is strictly Islamic so be sensitive as to how you dress.
